Explorer Journal

What is the Explorer Journal?

It is three months of daily pages for children aged five to twelve, and it takes about five minutes a day.

It starts with an envelope. Before your child writes anything, they open it and find their stickers, a note from Nova and Zeno, and a certificate with a blank line waiting for their name.

Each morning or bedtime, a child names how they are feeling, writes one thing they are grateful for, one kind thing that happened, and one challenge they faced and how they handled it. There is a box to draw in and a habit tracker to fill.

Every Sunday they pause and look back at their week. Every month they decorate a leaf that belongs only to them.

Two companions walk them through it. Nova asks the thoughtful questions and helps children understand themselves. Zeno explores new ideas and reminds them to be brave enough to try.

There are no wrong answers anywhere in this journal. A page filled in badly is worth more than a page filled in correctly, because the point is the thinking, not the result.

Why it matters

The skills our children will need most are rarely the ones taught through memorization. A child who can name what they are feeling, sit with a problem without giving up, and try something before they feel ready is building the foundation that everything else rests on.

Those things are not taught in a lesson. They are built through small, repeated practice, which is exactly what a daily journal is for.

The Explorer Journal is written around six skills.

  • Curiosity

Asking the question before reaching for the answer.

  • Confidence

Trying it without needing to be certain first.

  • Creativity

Making something that was not there before.

  • Resilience

Starting again after it did not work.

  • Communication

Putting a thought into words another person can hold.

  • Innovation

Improving something that already works fine.

Small daily habits create lifelong thinkers, learners and leaders.

What your child receives

Three months of daily pages

A short check-in for each day, with prompts for feelings, gratitude, kindness, problem solving and a space to draw.

Twelve weekly themes

Growth, kindness, curiosity, courage, creativity, teamwork, gratitude, emotional wisdom, confidence, discovery, leadership and purpose. One theme a week, each one building one of the six skills.

Twelve Weekly Reflection pages

A Sunday pause to look back, celebrate the week, and choose one small step for the week ahead.

Three Monthly Reflection pages

Your child decorates their monthly leaf, then a grown-up scans the code on the page to unlock their reward. Three months, three leaves, one finished story.

A sealed envelope, opened on day one

The first thing your child does is open their envelope. Inside is a sticker sheet, a folded note from Nova and Zeno, and an Explorer Certificate with their name to write on it. The certificate waits in the journal until they finish Month 3, and then they date it themselves.

A Quick Start guide for grown-ups

Printed inside the journal, so you know exactly how to use it from day one.

Everything your child needs for all three months is already in the journal.

Made with care

Thoughtfully made in British Columbia
Every Explorer Journal is printed in BC by Royal Printers Ltd., a local printer, and published by Future Minds Club in Vancouver. Keeping production close to home lets us check every detail ourselves and support our local community. Its Wire-O binding lets the journal lie completely flat, so little hands can write and draw comfortably on every page.

Created by a mother, guided by experts
The Explorer Journal was created by Vida Jannesar, a mother and neuroscience educator, and inspired by her own two children. It draws on neuroscience, positive psychology and reflective learning. Every page was reviewed by our Child Development Advisor, Negin Motamed Yeganeh, PhD, RCC, to make sure it is thoughtful, age-appropriate and genuinely supportive.

Designed to invite, not overwhelm
Designed by Barhen Studio with layout by Saleh Amini, the journal is calm, colourful and open, with plenty of room to write and draw. Nova asks the thoughtful questions; Zeno encourages trying new things. Together they guide your child through every page, and young children can use it on their own.
